With the omicron variant of the coronavirus accounting for nearly all new COVID-19 cases in the U.S., unvaccinated people are still more at risk of severe sickness compared to those who received the vaccine.
As of Feb. 8, all states have now partially vaccinated at least 50% of their population, according to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data presented by USAFacts. In some states, over 90% of the population has received the first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine.
The data also shows that all states and the District of Columbia have a fully vaccinated population of 50% or more.
These are the 10 states with the lowest partial vaccination rates in the country, according to the most recent data:
1. Wyoming (57.5%)
2. Mississippi (58.4%)
3. (tie) Louisiana (59.8%)
3. (tie) Idaho (59.8%)
5. Indiana (60.2%)
6. Tennessee (60.9%)
7. Alabama (61.4%)
8. Ohio (62.5%)
9. West Virginia (63.8%)
10. Georgia (64%)
The U.S. saw a sharp increase in COVID-19 cases and deaths over the summer as the delta variant spread nationwide. Seven-day averages of cases started to decline in September, but exploded this winter as the omicron variant circulated in the country.
The omicron surge seems to be on its way out, as coronavirus cases and deaths are on the decline nationwide. However, some states are still reporting an increase in infections. Last week, the U.S. hit a bleak milestone – reaching 900,000 COVID-19 deaths.
And while COVID-19 hospitalizations are on the decline, hospitals aren’t out of the woods yet as they prepare to be inundated with postponed surgeries.
Seven-day averages of COVID-19 cases have decreased in the last week, dropping 45.6% to 226,898 as of Feb. 7, according to USAFacts.
County-level data shows that vaccination rates within states can vary significantly. Daily updates from the CDC provide a look into full and partial vaccination rates at the county level.
Around 77% of people in the U.S. have received their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccination, and 65% of the population is fully vaccinated.
