The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have shared a sweet new photo of their daughter as she takes part in the Big Butterfly Count initiative across the country.

Prince William and Kate Middleton have shared a sweet photo of Princess Charlotte holding a butterfly as Royal enthusiasts go wild over her striking resemblance to Queen Elizabeth.

A photo taken by the duchess, posted on Instagram and Twitter, shows her six-year-old daughter holding a Red Admiral butterfly in her cupped hands.

Charlotte is dressed in a pale blue T-shirt from John Lewis with pink floral shorts near their home in Norfolk.

"We wanted to share these beautiful Peacock and Red Admiral butterflies as part of the Big butterfly Count initiative taking place across the UK," the couple wrote on Instagram.

"Save Butterflies are encouraging us all to count these incredible creatures not only because they are beautiful creatures to be around but they are also extremely important.

"Butterflies are vital parts of the ecosystem as both pollinators and components of the food chain. Hopefully you can beat last year's total @savebutterflies."

Royal fans were delighted to see the picture, with several commenting about her striking resemblance to the Queen.

"How lovely. Princess Charlotte looks so much like the Queen," one person commented.

"Charlotte is the image of her great grandmother our Queen," another wrote.

"My Queen Charlotte," another added.

The Big Butterfly Count is a UK survey aimed to help conservationists access the health of the environment.

Participants were urged to pick a spot and spend 15 minutes watching for butterflies before submitting their sightings.

The count began on July 16 and is due to finish on Sunday August 8.
