Chrissy Teigen and John Legend were among the many celebrities who made the cut to attend Barack Obama’s “family and close friends” 60th birthday party despite her cyberbullying scandal.
Mr Obama, who turned 60 on August 4, had been criticised for going ahead with the party when new rules state that everyone, including the vaccinated, must now wear a mask in indoor public settings in the US.
A report by The New York Post cited a source as saying Obama was creating a public health “nightmare” by trying to get nearly “700 people to his party”.
Piers Morgan had been calling on the former president to cancel his lavish birthday plans and wrote a piece in his column for The Daily Mail about Obama’s “hypocrisy”.
The former president then announced he would scale back plans to celebrate his 60th birthday, citing the spread of the COVID-19 Delta variant.
“Due to the new spread of the Delta variant over the past week, the President and Mrs Obama have decided to significantly scale back the event to include only family and close friends,” a spokeswoman for the former president said in a statement, as reported by New York Times.
Despite the scale back, many celebrities attended the event with controversial model Chrissy Teigen scoring an invite to the event.
Last month Ms Teigen declared herself in the “cancel club” after her old tweets resurfaced showing she cyberbullied Courtney Stodden when the reality star was just a teenager.
Ms Stodden said she was attacked by the model and received multiple “hateful and abusive” tweets.
