At least 7,000 civilians have died or been injured since Russia invaded Ukraine in February, and as the bloody war drags on, there’s strong bipartisan support in the U.S. to boost military aid to the besieged country. Overall, the U.S. has committed $3.7 billion in military aid to Ukraine since the February invasion, and President Joe Biden has requested Congress to approve another $20.4 billion more.
That number is a huge uptick from 2020, when Ukraine received $284 million in military aid, according to the nonpartisan data center USAFacts, but many in Congress are eager to give even more than Biden requested: The House approved an aid package with $40 billion in military and humanitarian spending on May 17.
The U.S. has already provided Ukraine a fearsome armory of military equipment, including 16 helicopters, over 1,400 Stinger anti-aircraft missiles, 90 howitzers, and more than 7,500 small arms, according to a recent Congressional report.
To put this spending into perspective, here’s a list of the top 10 countries that received the most military aid from the U.S. in 2020, according to a USAFacts analysis of data from the State Department and the U.S. Agency for International Development. The data shows the total amount of reported military obligations in fiscal year 2020. Due to reporting requirements and the presence of classified information, it does not include all defense spending.
