Emmanuel Bonne assured that France has always shown its commitment to peace and that it communicates with all parties, including Russia.

The Chinese Foreign Minister, Wang Yi, stated this Thursday (04.07.2022) during a telephone conversation with Emmanuel Bonne, the main diplomatic advisor to the French President, Emmanuel Macron, that “one cannot support the peace talks in Ukraine and, at same time, send weapons” to that country.

“China wants a ceasefire to be reached as soon as possible and peace to return, and we are working tirelessly to reach that goal in our own way. At the same time, we believe that all parties involved have to create the conditions necessary to promote peace talks instead of adding fuel to the fire,” Wang said during the conversation, the Chinese Foreign Ministry said in a statement last night.

“What cannot be done is to ask for a ceasefire to stop the war and at the same time constantly send a greater number of advanced weapons and equipment that will only escalate the war even more, nor can dialogue be supported while unilateral sanctions are imposed that they only stimulate the conflict to become entrenched,” he added.

For his part, Bonne assured that France has always shown its commitment to peace and that it communicates with all parties, including Russia, “on important issues such as Ukraine’s neutrality.

“France attaches great importance to China’s point of view in this situation and is ready to make even more efforts with the Chinese side to promote peace talks, reach a ceasefire and solve the crisis,” Bonne said, according to the release.

Likewise, Wang Yi reiterated during the call China’s ambiguous position, from which it has asked that the territorial integrity of all countries be respected and in which it has avoided using the word “invasion” to refer to the Russian offensive, while has reiterated its opposition to sanctions against Moscow.

On February 4, the Russian and Chinese presidents, Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping, proclaimed after meeting in Beijing the entry of bilateral relations “into a new era” of cooperation, and underlined the good state of ties between Russia and China.

According to Beijing, its relationship with Moscow is that of a “strategic partner”, but this does not include “neither alliance nor confrontation” nor “points to other countries”.
