Nearly three years after they were indicted on public corruption charges, former Tallahassee Mayor and City Commissioner Scott Maddox and his business associate and girlfriend Paige Carter-Smith have reported to prison.
Maddox, who was sentenced to five years in prison for masterminding a bribery scheme involving vendors at City Hall, reported to the Federal Prison Camp in Talladega, Alabama, according to Bureau of Prison records.
Carter-Smith, who was sentenced to two years, reported to the Federal Prison Camp in Marianna, which houses female inmates only. Both camps are minimum-security "satellite" facilities that sit next to medium-security federal prisons.
The Talladega camp, which currently houses about 132 inmates, was not Maddox's first choice to serve his time. He asked to be sent to the Federal Prison Camp in Pensacola, which is closer to home. The Marianna camp currently houses about 194 inmates.
They were indicted in December 2018 on numerous public corruption charges and pleaded guilty in 2019 as part of a cooperation agreement with federal prosecutors.
They were sentenced last month after testifying in the trial of their co-defendant, John "J.T." Burnette, a once-prominent businessman who was convicted on extortion and other charges. Burnette, who was sentenced Tuesday to three years in prison, asked to be sent to a prison camp as close to Tallahassee as possible.
All three were charged as part of a long FBI investigation into pay-to-play at City Hall. Maddox, 53, and Carter-Smith, 56, pleaded guilty to three bribery-related counts involving city vendors including Uber.
